The Breakfast of Champions: Gratitude

gratitude

1 Thessalonians 5:18 "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Some people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Based on research, they say that those who skip breakfast tend to eat more throughout the day than those who do eat breakfast, which can eventually lead to health problems (http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/most-important-meal). Well, I believe that if we skip our spiritual breakfast, we also tend encounter additional spiritual challenges throughout the day.

Have you ever had a day where you woke up complaining? And you might not have said what you thinking/feeling out loud, but the thoughts were definitely running through your mind. Whether you were too tired, it was gloomy/rainy outside, you didn't feel like going to work, you weren't looking forward to encountering certain people, etc., or perhaps your day just didn't kick off on a high note...

Well I have. In fact I caught myself doing it the other day. I hadn't slept well the night before, it was a chilly morning, and I was dreading getting up and beginning my daily routine. As I laid in the bed trying to gather my thoughts, the Lord just spoke to me and said, "give thanks." I was like wow Lord, you are so right. Instead of continuing to complain about my circumstances, I started rattling off all of the things that I was thankful for instead. I thanked God that I had a job to go to, that I had warm clothes to put on, that I actually woke up to experience the day ahead. Would you know that I felt 10 times better?! The weight of negativity melted away, and my mood changed just like that.

So from now on, the next time I catch myself complaining, I'm going to remember what God spoke to me that day, "give thanks." I challenge you to do the same. Set the tone for each day by finding something to be grateful for. And then, as you go about your day, keep that same spirit of gratitude alive. If you find yourself complaining or getting ready to complain, pause and give thanks. You would be surprised at how much a little gratitude can completely change your attitude!

God loves you!
